You put me on the right track: I found and removed the line
“\usepackage[utf8]{inputenc}”, and that solved the problem.

Thanks Alex - it took me a while to reply because I wanted to make sure, but I reinstalled texlive utility (which was out of date), updated all packages (which took a while), and still LyX won’t compile (nor would Texlive). If you have any other ideas, gratefully received!
