For those interested: The actual observed start time for the northern California event from Sacramento, CA was 07-Nov-2013 @ 22:25:36, moving out of the SW to the W. The witless statements were all over the board on time, so figured I'd shorten your search down so you don't waste hours of your life that you'll never get back - like I did. ;-( My video capture is up on Dirk's site. Duration is not a reliable way to distinguish between meteors and space junk. You can only do that using velocity, which is difficult to do from one vantage point. Re: [meteorite-list] California Only Meteorite HammerStone UnderDozers
You and me both, John. Even here in the central US that's a problem. We just went through a new addition across the street here. Same stories. Nail guns starting at 0430 and not stopping until 10 PM. Call the police, they respond with "We don't enforce that." Call the city code enforcement, they just send you letters saying "No violation found.". The pavers were the worst. Paving trucks lined up our streets for hundreds of yards every morning at idle. One of the neighbors had the guts to complain, so they started backing the trucks up into his yard. He complained more, then got a letter from the paving company's lawyers that any more complaints to the city would result in a slander lawsuit. It was real Al Capone stuff. One morning about 0430, I hear loud thumps outside the house. Thinking someone is kicking my side door in (or the neighbors) I whip into the garage (pistol at the ready) in my robe. The sounds were coming from a construction crew pounding concrete forms by truck headlight. A concrete truck guy told me later that the construction managers were behind schedule due to the recent rain. So, he get's the cash/carry laborer crew together and tells them if the concrete base isn't ready to be set Thursday morning, he would have "all your asses" deported. Sad truth about the illegal immigration problem here. It's not about rights, it's legalized slavery. If they aren't citizens, they can pay them under the table and make them do whatever they want. Get out of line or need that schedule slid to the left? Just threaten them with jail and deportation back to the drug lords and they make things happen. I only hope there's a warm place in hell for these people. --- On Wed, 6/1/11, John.L.Cabassi wrote: > From: John.L.Cabassi > Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] California Only Meteorite HammerStone > UnderDozers > To: "'Michael Gilmer'" , "'drtanuki'" > > Cc: [email protected] > Date: Wednesday, June 1, 2011, 9:46 PM > G'Day Mark, Dirk, Mike and List > I'm only a stone throw away from (no pun intended) from San > Juan > Capistrano. G'Day Mark, Dirk, Mike and List I'm only a stone throw away from (no pun intended) from San Juan Capistrano. I ventured down there a few times to do some relic searching, but to get permission is very hard, but it's not inhospitable to hunting. As for development, I have one going on across the road at the moment, the neighborhood vented concern but the money bags said they would be only single family homes and would not increase traffic. Well the traffic has increased ten fold, now they're 3 story New York style lofts. Can't trust anybody these days. I know the economy is bad and people need to make a buck, but they're not the ones responsible, it's the land developers. Damn, I called the police the other night because they were working till 9.00pm, should have finished at 7pm and the cops just blew me off. But Mark, I'll make a call and see what I can do. I had that same dream, many times! Very envious. Another great video. I'd be interested in the dimensions of the fall pattern. If it was as small as it appears in the video, would that be the result in a stone coming in very vertical? Is this a fresh fall discovered in grounds hunted in the past? I would also like to see or read about the description of the cut interior. And of the fusion crust. Thanks, Ruben. Dave and List, I don't know what his expert would say because I didn't ask or relay that info (sorry). You not only confirmed Norm's observations (that it was petrified wood) but added "not a palm wood". So, I (for one) have no reason to doubt your expertise that it came from Utah! List members Joe Kerchner and Pete had also contacted him. Their helpful comments caused him to reconsider his meteoritic conclusions. The seller was grateful for being spared the ordeal of selling an item "falsely." I think Norm phrased it well, "Everyone, please be advised that, in general, professional geologists and geological academicians know less about meteorites than list members!" Equally importantly, as in this case, the List members show a willingness to respectfully share that knowledge with others, great or small. But that is what the List is all about, isn't it? Re: [meteorite-list] CALIFORNIA-REGISTERED PROFESSIONAL GEOLOGIST FINDS HOBBY WITH EBAY
Dear List; I proclaim to be of a wood collectors ilk. I have been tutored by Walter Wright, world renown paleo botanist from CA. This is wood, probably from So. Utah if I had a guess, possibly Henry Mountains location, Steve Hatch or Walt W. could verify better. I have some in my back yard. This is not a palm wood. It lacks a few things, one being highly visible vascular cell bundles. It is probably a jurassic/triassic in age. There is no preserved cell structure it appears. This is caused by a cryptocrystaline replacement that didn't preserve the cell structure and that is common in Utah wood, and much of Wyoming wood. Nice rock, about 25 cents to a buck a pound depending on what you want to do with it. Thanks Norm I wasn't sure how to word it. I just have the 4 yr degree. The meteorites I was exposed to were the collection of the department our department technician had on display at school and I learned from him that we had the books in our library. Ken and all, How embarassing for geologists everywhere and another general downer for serious meteorite people. This stuff is frustrating and sad. I hate seeing people ripped off. My bristles go up everytime someone says: "I know it's real 'cause I had a geologist look at it---" As a career practicing geologist with over 10-years college-level teaching on the side, I can assure you that most geology curricula do not include ANY significant training or information regarding meteorites, much less, their identification. It is true that we geologists see a lot of earth rocks and are in a generally advantageous position to recognize something out of the ordinary when we see it, but I have described to this list before that in well-intentioned nievete, I used to pass around some fine SLAG pieces as examples of meteorites. Everyone, please be advised that, in general, professional geologists and geological academicians know less about meteorites than list members! Anyone reading this has been exposed to more meteorite information on this list than any geologist gets in multi-degree training unless they are involved in a course of study specifically involving meteorites! Michael Blood, I am sorry about the sad news of your email. All Portuguese TV stations have shown images of California burning, on the news. Less than 2 months ago, we had the same problem here: Vast areas of Portugal's forests went up in flames, with terrible consequences to the local wild life and worst, 19 people died, including some brave firemen. Myself and my wife Charmaine echo Marcia Swanson's words to you. May God bless and protect you and your family and all those affected by this terrible fire. There is more in Life than meteorites. My brother and his family live in San Bernardino, and had to evecuate yesterday evening. As of midnight last night, they didn't know if their house was still standing or not. My parents live a bit to the south of SB, in Perris, and last I heard there was no real threat there because they're well enough removed from the mountains and any reasonable amount of combustible materials. Re: [meteorite-list] California Burning
For those who may not be aware of the latest: I awoke at a VERY atypical 6:45 AM to a HOT room - got up and closed the bedroom window and went around the house to close the doors & windows and turn off the fans which HAD BEEN blowing cool air through the house. This is VERY unusual, as even on the hottest of days, it usually stays cool until at least 7:30 AM. However, I noticed something strange in the sky as I was going around and looked out to see the entire northern half of the sky a DARK, dark cloud but not a cloud...this was clearly a HUGE fire in the north. I turned on the TV and, sure enough, there were multiple fires in the LA back country areas. I went about my business, but as time has gone on, it started "raining" ash and the sky had become very sci-fi movie looking I checked the news again and fires had broken out ALL AROUND San Diego and the LA fires had already raced this far! Now, what had been 6 homes destroyed at 6:45 AM has become countless homes destroyed, hundreds more in eminent danger, humongus numbers of areas have had REQUIRED evacuation, many freeways and highways have been closed, everyone has been asked to turn off all but one TV and use no electricity or water, as they are needed to fight the fires. I live IN San Diego, so it would have to become one of the greatest national catastrophes on record to burn my home, but thousands are being effected right now and many more are "on alert" and asked to have all bags packed and ready to evacuate at a moment's notice. So, if you believe in God, your prayers would be appreciated. If you don't, your holding an image of abatement of the fires and safety of home and body in this part of the world would be appreciated. As I look out my office window it is SO strange to see huge snow flake like ashes drifting down, a wind blowing and a truly eerie sky. Re: [meteorite-list] California Burning
Dear Michael, and List. If you will remember the "God thread", I DO believe in God and the power of Prayer. Know that I and my family are praying for you and your family, and for the other humanity, and animals alike, that are lost and may be lost in this disaster. May He Bless and protect you all, and give you the courage and strength to deal with the situation. Our Prayers are with you all, Please keep us posted, and realise that if leaving is an option, nothing tangible is worth risking your life for. May my God be with you, and to anyone else on the list with convictions like my own, now is the time !! [meteorite-list] California Meteorite Display
Hello all, especially those who reside in California, Last night I ran across to TV program on the Los Angeles public broadcasting station (PBS) titled "California's Gold". It's hosted by Huell Howser and is a daily(?) half hour show about interesting places to visit in California. Last nights episode was about the "California State Mining and Mineral Museum" located in Mariposa, California (in the Sierra Nevada foothills near Yosemite). It is run by the California State Parks system. Most of the program was about the minerals and rocks displayed in the museum. Of interest to us is a display of meteorites including the main mass of the 128 pound (58 kilo) Ivanpah meteorite (called the San Bernardino Meteorite in the show). Also shown was the Chilkoot, Alaska iron and a large pallasite slice. I believe this meteorite display used to reside in the Ferry Building in San Francisco. If so, the display should also include a slice of the Goose Lake, CA iron and the pallasite probably is a large Brenham slice. All in all, the meteorite part was only on air for a couple of minutes but it certainly seems like a good place to visit. And if you are interested in minerals (especially the gold specimens) it's a definite must. Re: [meteorite-list] California
For the first time in a decade (and definitely since we moved to Maui) there was snow on top of Haleakala. Pretty freaky to look up from ocean level and see the tip of the mountain white; all the local kids and a whole bunch of the tourists went charging up to Haleakala National Park to throw snowballs at each other. Dear Dave, Ron, Jim, and Listees; It is -9 this morning on the high desert. This may help the reentry of the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer to cool faster. We better be sure to let the public know to put all of the dogs, sheep, and goats indoors for the night tonight, we wouldn't want another "Nakhla Dog" episode...or...would we? Problem here is that if no one saw it fall, it would just be dismissed as more junk in the yard by many. The weather is unusual right now. The average temperature here in Ky. should be in the 30's. It's about 65 right now. I think we must have swapped weather.
