Had an Orange-crowned Warbler at Cloves Lake Park in Staten Island in the field
in between the wood chip pile and the tower. Also present in and around that
field were a nice assortment of migrants including:
Purple Finch
Nashville Warbler
Lincoln's Sparrow
White crowned Sparrow
3-4 Indigo
How about we have a new rule on this list. If you do not like the subject
matter that someone is posting about, just delete it and save the rest of the
group your snide and rude comments. Last I checked Coopers Hawk is a bird that
is resident in New York, so it makes sense to post about it
Correction. The model airplane road is off limits and you can not go there.
Park police will issue tickets to anyone that is on that road. you also can
not go down the path from the ranger station. So the only way to see the bird
is to look for it from the main road. Again, you will be
The real problem with reporting on this list is really a matter of style and
not content in my opinion. Some people use this list to report information on
common, resident or migrant birds and others use this list to report regional
rarities and rare migrants. So if you are only looking to
for about an hour before dusk and had at least 8 more
there, including 1 wich flew most of the way into the inlet and almost got as
far as the sandbar.

Here is my two cents based off of over 30 years of birding in this state. I
find this entire discussion absurd and think that everyone has pretty much
missed the real point. I have no clue why people get so up in arms about
flushing owls. Let me preface this by saying that some of the people
half way to the raunt

There were more Tree Swallows than I could count migrating down the beach at
Fort Tilden today. There was literally no morning flight from sun up until
10:00am and then the flood gates opened. For 2 and a half hours, hundreds of
birds were flying over at any given moment. I do not know how to

The bird has made it way north east an is now near shore bordering the golf

Still in the previously reported spot at Alley Pond Park. Bird was seen at the

On path on hillside that runs parallel to the stream. Near the picnic grounds.
If you park in main lot go straight up the steep hill and make a right on the
dirt path with the little concrete wall that borders the picnic area. Bird was
on the hillside looking down over the lake.

onto the pond is the muddiest/muckiest area of
the pond. Last week I sunk in up to my knee. It has dried up quite a bit since

While looking for the Franklin's Gull which as reported by Andrew, was not
re-found, I observed a small gull flying offshore with a few laughing gulls.
It was obviously smaller, with bold white markings on the wings, a bold black
triangle on the edge of primaries and a brown back, white tail
Tom Dulski and I spent several hours birding the perimeter of the Riis park
golf course. It was loaded with sparrows of all of the expected varieties.
Among them were 2 Vesper Sparrows and 2 Clay-colored Sparrows. Funny but the
fields at Fort Tilden held very few birds compared to the golf
Female. Take road from parking area. Just before first left turn on road head
right into dunes. There is a tree line with berries and behind there a bunch of
phragmities. Bird was there. Hundreds of other blackbirds around feeding in
dunes and going into phrags.

A female was first spotted by Jeff Ritter. After a while I refound the bird as
it flushed off the jetty after a large boat came by too close. Shortly after 2
more (both females) flew by.
So a total of 3 were there.

Pulled this off of the NY Birders Facebook page. No clue if it has been
confirmed? Just getting the word out...
Ann Lazarus and Louise Fraza report an Adult VARIED THRUSH in
Stuyvesant Town, found a half an hour earlier near the NW corner of
Stuyvesant Town at 20th ST and 1st Ave.
I had a Red-necked Grebe at Fort Wadsworth off of the jetty. Mike Shanley and
I then had a flyby flock of Canada Geese that had a Cackling Goose mixed in
with it. The geese flew over Brooklyn and past the Verazano bridge and kept
going. In case anyone wants to see what a Cackling looks like
Drake (2nd winter). Maybe the same bird. Near the Silver gull club.

I just realized that this never made it to NYSBIRDS. Some very good
waterfowl was seen today on Staten Island at Arbutus Pond. First Anthony
Ciancimino found a pair of Tundra Swans that were scared away by the
resident pair of Mute Swans before anyone else could get to see them. The

bridge is no longer closed as of 5 pm today. It was stuck in the up
position but is back and open for traffic. So no need to detour to the

There was a flock of 24 Common Redpoll at Great Kills Park. Go all the way
to the end of the road. There is a sign there that says permits are
required to go on to the dirt road. Make a left and park in the parking
lot. There is a path that leads to the beach right at the corner of the
lot.
After a long search eventually found at at the Sylvan Water. It was calling
from inside dense bushes the border the hillside next to white flowering trees.

Just got word that the Caracara was refound and photographed sitting in a
tree on the side of the road about 1/2 mile north of where it was feeding
on the deer carcass. This was at 4:45 today. The photos are posted on a
hawkwatching facebook page. So the bird may well be there tomorrow as it
I have video of the Franklin's and a Laughing Gull mating from a few days back.
