THE BIRD AT CLOSE RANGE FOR 15 MINUTES AND RECORDED SEVERAL PHOTOS. THE SAND
BAR IS ONLY REACHED BY SKIFF,BUT BIRDERS VISITING CUPSOGUE
with a diplomatic assist to derek rogers we must retract the sighting of a
solitary sandpiper on dune rd yesterday-most probably a spotted

While taking a brief trip in the Lake Ronkonkoma County Park,just north of the
lake,I came a across a resting turkey vulture.I cautiously advanced until I got
right underneath him,at which time he took off,headed north.I don’t know if
this is a common sighting in mid western Suffolk,so I
Jim Cohen and I spent about 3 hrs. birding on the Cupsogue flats. Overall
numbers were not impressive(only 20 Short billed Dowitchers ,2 Willets,50
Semipalmated sandpiper,12 Least sandpiper to give an idea) We did have two
sightings of Pectoral sandpiper, which seemed noteworthy.Before sailing
Today at 3 pm Jim Cullen and I had the previously reported Baird’s sandpiper in

Jim Cullen and I had an active afternoon of shore birding on the sand bar west
of the “traditional” flats .Just a note to anyone who would travel by Dune rd.
...I don’t know if Cupsogue is accessible due to last weeks pavilion fire.We
saw 3 Least Sandpipers, 75 Semi-Palmated Sandpipers, 3
A few minutes of backyard birding in Bayport produced a Bald Eagle soaring to
the southwest. Also observed were 3 merlin and several accipiter. A mixed
flock consisting of chickadees, white-breasted nuthatch, phoebes (5-6),
yellow-rumped warblers and blue headed vireo also moved through the
Not sure if it’s of interest,but this morning I had a flock of over 20 Eastern
Bluebirds at Bellport Country Club. I haven’t seen any postings of this bird in
some time.Any comments or thoughts would be welcome off list.

There is currently a female Eurasian Wigeon in Mill Pond, Montauk Hwy.
Sayville...north side of the road.This pond produces consistently most every
year.As an aside,while looking for ravens found earlier by D.Rogers(see his
post of 11/30-Patchogue water tower) I found a Peregrine Falcon perched
While scoping Patchogue Lake south of Roe Blvd.,I spoke with a
photographer(Dom.C) who had a Bald Eagle fly over the lake.He showed me
pictures of this beautiful adult bird,so be on the lookout.

Jim Cullen and I caught an early(7:30a.m.) rising tide in and around the
Moriches/Cupsogue area via boat.Highlights included a Whimbrel, 53 Red Knots
(one with a blue tag high on the leg but showing no numbers)countless
Sanderlings and Dowitchers, 6 Royal Terns, 3 Forster’s Tern and one lone
Yesterday late afternoon,I found a large group of Greater Yellowlegs resting in
the mouth of Howells Creek off Howells Point in Bellport.When I went back to
get my scope (I was golfing at the time!)I set up and counted 49 birds.A common
bird but the concentration was interesting.

from underneath the south end of the Ponquogue bridge.The birds were resting on
an island several hundred yards to the east.

Black Tern on the exposed tidal flat west of Cupsogue. Also there were 25 Red
Knot,four of which had colored,numbered tags on their legs.This info is

Jim Cullen and I birded the low tide this morning at the Cupsogue Beach area
spending most of our 3 hrs.on “Bird Island” just to the west of Cupsogue(tidal
island accessible only at low tide by boat).This area was loaded with birds
with many hundreds of Sanderling being the most numerous
Jim Cullen and I visited the flats at Cupsogue this afternoon and were rewarded
with, despite the cold, a Roseate and a Black tern.Overall numbers of birds
were quite low.
