Overcast, dwreey morning. New migrants were Red-winged Blackbird and Common Grackle. Continuing in the water, Greater Scaup (200+ in the channel), Lesser Scaup (Bedell Creek), 15 Bufflehead, 5 Hooded Merganser, 10 Red-breasted Merganser, 6 Red-throated Loon, 2 Horned Grebe and a male and female breeding plumage Common Goldeneye. On land Great Blue Heron, Belted Kingfisher, Red-tailed hawk, Kestrel, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Northern Mockingbird, American Robin, House Sparrow, House Finch, Song Sparrow and Northern Cardinal. Stopped by after lunch, still freezing, 31 Degrees. Some birds by the feeders, namely; White-throat, Fox and Song Sparrow plus Mourning Dove, Cardinal and usual House Sparrows. No birds in the marsh except for a Great Blue Heron and flyover Northern harrier and Bald Eagle In the channel, there were 1,000+ Scaup in three groups, mainly Greater with some Lesser. Mike picked out a single male Redhead that we both photographed with 1000 mm lenses and then enlarged to confirm the ID. The new hand held cameras are wonderful. I’m thawing out. The day started slow but picked up considerably when Mike Farina and I saw an adult and juvenile HUDSONIAN GODWIT feeding. Both birds soon flew off. Among the few Shorebird species was a group of 12 KILLDEER. The trail along the BACK fence had a LINCOLN , several SWAMP and SONG SPARROWS as well as SAVANNAH SPARROWS around the main trail plus a SALTMARSH SPARROW in the marsh. In the dune area there were single YELLOW-RUMPED and a BLACKPOLL WARBLER. Also, a very brief look at a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT. Very windy, gusts to 21 mph. No Sparrows seen or heard in the marsh. A WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER posed next to a SEMIPALMATED (nice size comparison in the photo), first for me as all the prior reports have come from later in the day after I left. All together 11 species of shorebirds. CLAPPER RAILS were much subdued but one managed to walk around in the open whale a few others called. The MARSH WREN continues singing in the reeds next to the west side of the pond., singing three feet away, burroughed in and I couldn’t find it. A WILLOW FLYCATCHER continues and can be heard at the end of the boardwalk on the golf course side. The Thunderbirds are practicing for this weekend’s holiday show and flew over so I could take their picture. Hey, they’re birds. The Osprey breeding has been terminated (eggs destroyed), so the barriers on the path have come down and one can walk around the pond. Ospreys are still perching on the platform and surrounding perches. Clapper Rails are very active calling in the marsh but stayed mostly hidden. Seaside Sparrows were also actively calling as were a Saltmarsh Sparrow. A Marsh Wren sang along the path by the west side of the pond while a Clapper Rail and Seaside Sparrow were calling just beyond in the marsh. All these marsh birds require patience to see. The first Ospreys of the year are the pair nesting on the south end of the property. Yesterday additional Ospreys nesting on poles and boxes on 4 sites in the marsh islands appeared. The resident pair are a continuing female (check the band) and a brand new very skittish young male. Mike Farina, the biologist on site, has established a tolerance perimeter as a result and isolated the trails with fencing to limit access to the nest area. Hopefully, the male will get used to people and the fences can come down. Meantime please honor them and take advantage of the chairs and benches provided. A GREAT EGRET showed up early in the week (one day) and a SNOWY EGRET was there yesterday and today. The only other resident migrants so far are TREE SWALLOWS and RED-WINGED PLACKBIRDS. Marine Nature Study Area. 24 Aug I spent the morning in the dry part of the facility, ignoring the marsh although a fully grown CLAPPER RAIL was observed from the parking lot. A RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD is hanging around. It appears in the blue salvia along the fence to the west and in the canna lilies off the parking lot. Today it was seen in both spots, but only stayed a few minutes at a time in each place before moving on before returning. Chairs have been conveniently placed at both places, so one can relax while waiting for the hummer to show. The watchers today all had big lenses and most managed satisfactory photos. MNSA, Oceanside 26 May Yesterday's storm coupled with a new moon high tide completely flooded the marsh. It probably also washed out any nests already there. This morning the marsh was still mostly under water just after high tide when I arrived.. As a result the land birds normally in the marsh were mostly confined the the path edges. Around the pond marsh birds were calling and/or singing and also nicely visible. There were a number of shorebirds also feeding.. After a stop at Hempstead Lake SP, I went over to Oceanside and just missed a SEASIDE SPARROW. While going back to look for it, we found a SALTMARSH SPARROW. So, the sparrows are back along with a number of CLAPPER RAILS. A GREEN HERON showed, but not the recent Tricolored Heron. Shorebirds consisted of SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, WILLET, LESSER and GREATER YELLOWLEGS, SEMIPALMATED and LEAST SANDPIPERS plus SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. Breeding birds nesting or feeding in the marsh, consisted of OSPREY, GLOSSY IBIS, GREAT and SNOWY EGRETS, TRICOLORED HERON, CLAPPER RAIL (calling in the marsh), AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, WILLET, LAUGHING GULLS. Marine Nature Study Area, Oceanside 19 July Overcast day at very low tide. A few shorebirds were present, namely Semipalmated Plover, Lesser Yellowlegs, Least Sandpiper and Short-billed Dowitcher. I observed 5 widely scattered Saltmarsh Sparrows. After the spring/summer high tides, Seaside Sparrow nests were flooded and the sparrows seemed to have left. I also didn't see or hear any Clapper Rails this morning. Forster's Terns, Egrets and Night-Herons continue. There was a female or young Yellow Warbler along the trail by the pond. Marine Nature Study Area, Oceanside 2 April Both GREAT EGRET and SNOWY EGRET were feeding in the marsh this morning. An adult LITTLE BLUE HERON flew by in the distance. A few GREATER YELLOWLEGS were scattered around. OSPREY pairs were seen on two nest platforms and a PEREGRINE FALCON was seen atop the nest box in the marsh (there are now 4 eggs visible in the cam). Little else of note. Work on the replacement boardwalk continues as well as for the display sign housings destroyed by Sandy. (Fortunately the displays themselves were removed in advance of the storm). Looking forward to an improved updated facility. For a change, a decent mix of shorebirds and sparrows. Starting with the shorebirds:-BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, PECTORAL, STILT AND LEAST SANDPIPERS,.GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. July 26, Oceanside Since "Sandy", full moon high tides at the Marine Nature Study Area, Oceanside have inundated the marshes. Consequently, nests in the marsh have on more than one occasion been washed away. As a result, nesting success has been poor. Today, turned out to be a notable surprise, Joining Mike Farina (staff biologist) for his daily survey, we encountered 3, 2 and 3 OR A TOTAL OF 8 SALTMARSH SPARROWS. No Seaside Sparrows in evidence for a few weeks now. A hasty photo of one cooperative bird showed a silver band on one leg and a black band on the other.This combination indicates the bird was banded in the nest this year by the group surveying breeding marsh sparrows on east coast marshes this summer. (If both bands were on one leg it indicates an adult). If you encounter any SALTMARSH SPARROWS, try to look for bands and report the info to the Oceanside staff. Today there was a KILLDEER, LEAST and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, GREATER YELLOWLEGS and WILLET. (also, Short-billed Dowitchers yesterday). There were 2 calling CLAPPER RAILS, 3 SALTMARSH SPARROWS and 1 SEASIDE SPARROW. All the sparrows were scattered, singing and visible on high perches in the marsh. The OSPREYS have fledged but return to the nest platform and are still being fed.. A phalanx of photographers were out capturing images of adults carrying fish.. Other shorebirds included SEMIPALMATED AND BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, SEMIPALMATED and WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, DUNLIN, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS and WILLET, Most of the shorebirds were in breeding plumage and feeding in the marsh as opposed to the pool edges. Sandy's storm surge has flattened the vegetation, new now coming up, allowing us to see the birds that probably, in prior years, were hidden in the foliage. Earlier in the morning SALTMARSH and SEASIDE SPARROWS were singing in the marsh. No MARSH WREN today. Marine Nature Study Area, 29 March Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff ) went looking for early shorebirds this morning, but only found the pair of AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS that had been present for a while. Waders today included GREAT EGRET, GREAT BLUE HERON, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON and a fos GLOSSY IBIS. The OSPREY pair are at the nest and a RED-TAIL HAWK was seen flying over the golf course. The path at the SE corner of the pond produced the first SEASIDE SPARROW seen since before "Sandy" and a bit father north a CLAPPER RAIL ran across the path and into the marsh on our right and another called from the pond edge on our left. Sparrows included SONG, SAVANNAH and WHITE-THROAT. A NORTHERN FLICKER in the dunes was also a new migrant. Singing Red-wing Blackbirds were a nice touch to an early spring day. Hi all. I walked the trails on Tuesday afternoon and looked over the place for the first time since Sandy. The staff and Town workers have cleaned the area so that it's almost as before, although it is a bit disconcerting to see seaweed at eye level in the shrubs along the trails. Storm surge was 8 to 10 feet above high tide. A number of trees have come down in the upland areas (now cleared). It remains to be seen how much damage 3-5 feet of salt water will do to the vegetation. The marshes appear fine. The trails lost a few inched of top soil but walking is good. The cinder block office and rest rooms are also open. As to birds, lots of activity at the feeders, but not much on the trails. Several hundred Greater Scaup are rafting in the channel. When work begins on the repairing or replacing the exhibit building behind the office, the facility will again be closed. [nysbirds-l] Marine Nature Study Area, Oceanside.
Hi all. I walked the trails on Tuesday afternoon and looked over the place for the first time since Sandy. The staff and Town workers have cleaned the area so that it's almost as before, although it is a bit disconcerting to see seaweed at eye level in the shrubs along the trails. Storm surge was 8 to 10 feet above high tide. A number of trees have come down in the upland areas (now cleared). It remains to be seen how much damage 3-5 feet of salt water will do to the vegetation. The marshes appear fine. The trails lost a few inched of top soil but walking is good. The cinder block office and rest rooms are also open. As to birds, lots of activity at the feeders, but not much on the trails. March 13 As the clouds began to break up, I went to the Marine Nature Study Area in Oceanside. Lots of Red-winged Blackbirds calling and singing.
