Yesterday Jack Rothman, Bob DeCandido & I spent a couple of hours birding in
Pelham Bay Park. Jack Rothman had posted the day before (Aug. 9) that
shorebirds were foraging in puddles in the parking lot at Orchard Beach,
mentioning Semipalmated Plovers, Semipalmated, and Least Sandpipers, and Lesser
Yellowlegs.

Here's what we found:

Orchard Beach Parking Lot:

A mixed flock of shorebirds numbering at least 70 birds, including a mix of at
least 55 Semipalmated and Least Sandpipers, but I couldn't get an exact count
of either species. Some of the swallows came down to the puddle for a drink.
Jack had seen 70 Semipalmated Plovers on Thursday, but we only found three. The
Pectoral Sandpiper was new.

Canada Goose - maybe a dozen and more grazing on a lawn nearby
Semipalmated Plover - 3
Least Sandpiper - see note above
Pectoral Sandpiper - 1
Semipalmated Sandpiper - see note above
Short-billed Dowitcher - 7 juveniles
Lesser Yellowlegs - 6 (adults & juveniles)
Laughing Gull - 2 at puddle
Herring Gull - flyovers
Osprey - at nearby lagoon
Northern Rough-winged Swallow
Cliff Swallow - 2 to 4
Barn Swallow - at least 12, but possibly as many as 20

--
Bartow-Pell:

Ruby-throated Hummingbird - at least 5 including adult male
Downy Woodpecker
Great Crested Flycatcher
Warbling Vireo
White-breasted Nuthatch
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - 5
Blue Jay
Tree Swallow - flyover
Gray Catbird
Northern Mockingbird
American Goldfinch - several near nest
Chipping Sparrow - 2
Baltimore Oriole - adult male
Yellow Warbler

Here's to mud-free birding in the Bronx,

Deb Allen
