Dear members of the OpenHealth list: I am Luciana Cavalini, I am an epidemiologist from Brazil. Maybe I can give some additional advice. [For some unreasonable reason, I did not sign in for this mailing list yet, that's why I'm using my husband's e-mail - my contact is below.] If Hector wants something similar to EpiInfo, he's searching much more for a biostatistical analysis package than anything else. In this case, the gold standard is R (http://www.r-project.org), both for the Open Source and proprietary world, and for any operational system. The library Rcmdr makes it very "user-friendly" (it started as a reverse engineering for SPSS). The only thing that EpiInfo does and R with Rcmdr doesn't do is the Chi-square for heterogeneity for stratified analysis. But it is implementable by hand (if it is not available in any other R package). Other than that, R performs any of the analysis required for epidemiological surveillance for aggregated data, including the right way to estimate the endemic curves, by using the Poisson rather than the Gaussian distribution. If you need purpose-specific decision support systems operating at the individual level, there's nothing available yet, as far as I know, but everybody is very welcome to contribute on our project, the Epidemiological Surveillance Support System (https://launchpad.net/epis3), a proud member of the Multilevel Healthcare Information Modeling project (https://launchpad.net/mhlim). Have a look at NetEpi Collection at http://code.google.com/p/netepi/ - production-ready, with large scale deployments, and under active, funded development. And runs on Linux. If you need help getting it installed, just email us on the mailing list.
