I currently pay 7€ per month and everything basically just works. Had
this contract since 2001, some time in between the company (Puretec)
was bought by 1and1. I've never been a huge 1and1 fan, but it still
works fine, so I'm pretty happy regardless.

I don't even use 90% of what's included in the package, so basically I
could give you hosting and up to 492 eMail addresses (of the 500
addresses included ;) ) with your own domain for free if you want
that.

All the best, Marcel

one Starbucks coffee or 2 regular ones ;)

I currently pay GBP9.59 for the domain and email forwarding, and £21.60 for
the hosting per year. Personal email addresses from 123-reg with pop, imap
and webmail cost GP2.99+VAT *EACH*, with 5GB space (well, it says "from
£2.99".and here in rip-off Britain, "from" means you will usually be
charged more than that, you hardly ever end up paying the price you see).

Every single step in this seems to involve paying for something extra just
to get a minimally working something to keep an unpaid time-consuming hobby
going, this is the point at which I have to make a decision whether to spend
to do things properly, or give up trying to do things properly. I'm more
inclined towards the latter at the moment.

BTW if Dilwyn's site is down I think I am right in saying that Urs' The
Distribution has an image of the site,

Slightly out of date unless Urs has updated it since I last checked.

If anyone wants to host a copy of my site temporarily until I'm back on my
feet (I am getting there slowly!) I'd be happy to send them a copy of my
site on DVD or other means, ready to upload (I haven't got space left in my
Dropbox, sorry). In fact, if anyone wants to take it over completely they'd
be welcome, then I can get back to writing QL software again.

I'm not rushing to get it back online until these problems are sorted, I
have far more important things to worry about in my life at the moment.

The remaining email issues to sort out are:

1. Investigate why such a high percentage of emails via the dilwyn.me.uk
forwarding just "vanish". I've tinkered with several email providers in the
last few days (and roped others in to send test emails) and that part of the
equation is pretty consistent across all providers. As it's a paid service,
I expected 123-reg to help. Their communication has been less than helpful.
Even with spam filtering and flagging set to lowest possible setting, the
number of test emails which failed to arrive was well into double digits,
and consistent across the various emailing services used. This has actually
frightened me - I'd always assumed people who told me I never replied to
their emails either mistyped my email address or sent them to old email
addresses or whatever, or that spam filtering knocked out one or two genuine
messages, but no, our tests showed that just under 15% of emails forwarded
via my domain during the tests failed to arrive. About 5% took 24 hours or
more to arrive. I'm not an IT pro, but do you think this means I should not
renew with 123-reg next time? Or not bother with a 'domain' at all?

2. Duplicate Gmails in Windows Live Mail. Looking at Gmail forums, it's a
very common problem, none of the suggested fixes work in my case.

I pay for the dilwyn.me.uk domain and pay for the web space.

Frankly the domain has been so unreliable and support so poor I should just
do away with it.

I agree with Marcel on this. I used a free host for several years and
was very satisfied until it was taken over by another firm. Initially
all went well but slowly the advertising on the site became more and
more doubtful until it reached the point where Norton rated the site as
being dangerous, not because of my content but because of the advertising.

I did think of closing the site, but a revival of interest in the advice
content gave me second thoughts. Since 2011 I have used a commercial
host, 1&1, and I have been very satisfied. Last year I payed £55.75 for
the hosting and the domain. Although the QL interest in the site is
diminshing I am developing non- QL content so that I can justify
maintaining the site.

The main snag with a commercial host is that they assume you are a
business and you get regular requests to update your contract with new
facilities.

BTW if Dilwyn's site is down I think I am right in saying that Urs' The

Thanks for your patience Alain.
This email saga is proving to be very stressful. I am now getting duplicates
of all Gmail emails in my Windows Live Mail inbox just to add to my woes. It
seems from gmail forums that this is a very common problem and almost as
many reasons and fixes as there are versions of WLM, none of which work for
me. I absolutely hate Gmail, not one thing has gone right since I started
using it. Google should stick to search engines.

Purely in terms of emails, it's an inconvenience. However, as I am a person
who uses different passwords for all websites, I have about 30 pages of
login details to wade through before the old email addresses are
discontinued shortly. As such, the email problems make it risky for me to
change logins everywhere because emails currently randomly don't get through
with no error messages, turn up in random numbers (usually duplicates), and
sometimes turn up days after being sent.

Until these problems are sorted, I'm effectively out of the QL scene, I'm
not going to risk making changes until I have no choice (the old email
addresses expire end of the month)

Modern IT is getting so bad we will soon be better off going back to pencil
and paper.

Quite the opposite I imagine. I get about 3 or 4 a week now, so it seems
everyone is trying that little scam.

I listen politely, it's their long distance call after all, and when I
get fed up, I tell them to:

* F*ck off! or
* I'm an IT Professional, and I know what you are up to, so f*ck off! or
* I use Linux, not Windows, so f*ck off!

Although I had one the other day, and I waited for her to tell me I had
a Windows problem online, and I just told her to go away!.

They always do.

Sometimes it;s best not to be too smart with them though, a friend did
so a while back and before they hung up they told him that they would
call him randomly and frequently at around 03:00 in the morning for
p155ing them about!

I find that while the wait for my ancient laptop running XP to start
up (or, a VirtualBox VM actually!) they get very very irritated at the
time it takes to boot up - must be expensive calling from abroad.

(Oh, and despite playing silly buggers with them, we didn't manage to get
them to tell us who they were!)
You won't. They closest (for certain values of closest) you will get is
we are the technical support team for Virgin Media, BT, and a whole
list of other Broad band suppliers, and Microsoft.

Still, it's fun - when I can be bothered.

I think the problem is because the instruction to ignore it is at the

This is what should have appeared earlier!!

At entry:
D0.L contains the (positive) number
A0 points to the end of the area to
contain the ASCII result

 At exit
D0 = 0
A0 points to the start of the number

This, and a further routine to deal with negatives, is in the Library files on

Oh lucky you, we get two or three a day, although I couldn't say it's PC stuff
as I didn't use to answer them on the understanding their calling software mark
you as live if you answered, HA I forgot our answer machine was on so they
know it's live anyway, they come up as Internation out of area as we have
relatives abroad it is an annoyance though.
I once got a location (an area in India - surprise) put it into Google maps and
was amazed at the number of call centres that came up in that area- thanks
Google, try it some time you;ll be impressed (or not)
Something should be done - petition the Indian high commission or something -
an embargo on lucky beads wont suffice I think

All the best - Bill

Quite the opposite I imagine. I get about 3 or 4 a week now, so it seems
everyone is trying that little scam.
