The only "big deal" aspect I know about is that you break previous 
permalinks to that blog that others may have copied and linked to and you 
may confuse things using your feeds.

The field is handle in website table.
I've tried it. No problem ;)

Hi Eugene,

I'm no authority on this, but it should be ok - I've done it before.
Just update the website.handle field for the given record.  You may
have to restart the app afterwards.
