Re: draft of ASF board report
Hi, Flavio. I started with 0.3; used to make changes required by my research to the code. Then I realized that keeping pace with and contributing to the community is a win-win solution. So, yes, I've migrated to 0.6, even though I still have to maintain some 0.3 applications. As you might have noticed, I've already started submitting proposals/patches, although some of them still need improvement. Agree with @Flavio that we start a PoweredBy page (if nobody's doing it, I shall do it). I believe more applications will be found. On Wed, Sep 4, 2013 at 3:42 PM, FPJ wrote: > Agreed, that's very cool. Hey, Kurtt, you're not using 0.3 any longer, > you? Agreed, that's very cool. Hey, Kurtt, you're not using 0.3 any longer, you? Hopefully you have migrated to a newer version. I suggest we start a PoweredBy page with this use case. -Flavio > -Original Message- > From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf > Of Oleg Tikhonov > Sent: 04 September 2013 08:03 > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: draft of ASF board report > > Wow! Re: draft of ASF board report
Hi, Flavio, Matthieu, Patrick, and all Cheer up, guys. I'm seeing opportunities in this stream processing field as well as in S4. What I haven’t mentioned is that, S4 had found successful applications in our research group even back in the 0.3.0 days and now in our start-up. We have built scalable real time search over microblogs with some S4 features enhanced (the paper appears in 2013’s EDBT proceedings, link is http://www.edbt.org/Proceedings/2013-Genova/papers/edbt/a31-lin.pdf); we also built a platform on top of S4 for detecting and analyzing real-time traffic conditions, processing over hundreds of millions of records every day. Now we plan to contribute to the community. I personally have created and responded to some JIRAs, but I would like to do more. Actually, I am ongoing proposing a design documentation of integrating S4 with Helix along the roadmap; this would help enhancing the elasticity feature for S4. So, I suppose we could put the "retirement" discussion aside? Give us the new comers some time perhaps a couple of months to see what we can do to make the community healthier. Of course, some of us are new; we shall ask for your help and guidance occasionally, please be responsive (as what you are doing now), :) You all have done brilliant jobs! :) On Wed, Sep 4, 2013 at 6:45 AM, Patrick Hunt wrote: > Correct, I was referring to the rece > > nt thread about shutting down the > s4 podling. Correct, I was referring to the recent thread about shutting down the s4 podling. Re: draft of ASF board report
I think Pat is referring to the discussion we have had when I proposed to retire the project. I didn't use this exact word, but it is essentially what I meant. You and a few others stepped up and said that you wouldn't like to see it retiring and would like to give it a shot at helping with building a community, contributing patches, and just increasing activity in general. Does it make sense? -Flavio On Sep 3, 2013, at 8:27 PM, Oleg Tikhonov wrote: > the item 3 - deleted completely. > > Can you shed more light on "retirement" discussion. I would remove 3 entirely - that's not needed for graduation. You should also mention the result of the "retirement" discussion - give the ipmc/board some insight: that folks stepped up and are pushing forward, i.e. no retirement at this point. RE: draft of ASF board report
When you say put out more releases, do you mean more in number or having releases more frequently? S4 has had two releases already, but the frequency of releases has been low in the past. I think activity is a real issue. Your point 2 is a good summary of what I've been trying to say. We are on the same page there. -Flavio > -Original Message- > From: Patrick Hunt [mailto:[email protected]] > Sent: 03 September 2013 06:42 > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: draft of ASF board report > > I have a few comments: > > 1) I don't think the issues listed in "Three most important issues to address in > the move towards graduation" are apropos. I have a few comments: 1) I don't think the issues listed in "Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation" are apropos. What you want to list here is things blocking graduation. IMO this is two things; 1) put out more releases, and 2) build community (of which 2 is more important at this point) 2) I think you should also include mention of a PPMC member requesting that the podling be retired - and the results of that discussion. Thanks for the effort! That looks good to me, except maybe that in my view the real issue about graduation is the activity. Adding more requirements will only raise up the bar for graduation. RE: draft of ASF board report
I'm not sure we are on the same page. We have had a couple of threads now about graduation and the threads started with someone from the IPMC asking us about it. Given that we haven't been able to conclude what to do with respect to graduation (that's my conclusion out of the message threads), I would suggest we explain it in the report. To perhaps rephrase what I already said, activity has been low but we got some developers standing up and stating they would keep the project going. Given that there is some revived interest, I suggest we keep the project alive and see how it evolves during the next 3 months. I think all this should figure in the report. I'm also fine to have Joe as a mentor if he is interested. Do we need to have a PPMC vote for this? About the status page, it is our page. We should look into updating it. I remember having some discussion about updating it, but I can't recall what happened. About the podling name, we have created a jira a while back and it is not resolved yet: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/PODLINGNAMESEARCH-10 About a new committer, we voted Daniel Gómez Ferro a committer. It is in one of the quarterly reports I have sent previously. -Flavio > -Original Message- > From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf > Of Oleg Tikhonov > Sent: 02 September 2013 06:05 > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: draft of ASF board report > > Thanks, valuable feedbacks are, indeed. > > @Flavio - agree with Joe, it's not about graduation, it's about inactivity. > Fortunately, the S4 community was & is biting & kicking. > On the other hand, it's my personal opinion, any "project in incubator" > must tend to be TLP. > > About mentoring - Good mentor is worth for the project, and for sure > he/she should be responsive. Re: draft of ASF board report
Thanks, valuable feedbacks are, indeed. @Flavio - agree with Joe, it's not about graduation, it's about inactivity. Fortunately, the S4 community was & is biting & kicking. On the other hand, it's my personal opinion, any "project in incubator" must tend to be TLP. About mentoring - Good mentor is worth for the project, and for sure he/she should be responsive. If Joe would like to step up as a mentor - so be it, IMO. @Joe "Note that the community has also been failing to keep the incubator status page up to date. The last status report listed was from 2012, but there have been status reports since. IIRC, someone has been added as a committer, but is not listed yet under project info. The last release (0.6.0) is not listed on the incubator status page either." Who can fix that? Or how to fix it? >Has the podling name search been completed? May be open the JIRA for the issue? Definitely we should accomplish the task ASAP. It doesn't seem to me there's much going on in the S4 community. In March, the dev mailing list was reasonably busy (132 messages) and then that's dwindled to less than 35 per month since March. There was no activity in git on August at all. A little in July, more in June. *If* there's enough interest on the community side to keep the project going, then I'd be happy to step up as a mentor. Right now, I'm very concerned that the project lacks a diverse/large enough community to remain healthy. Note that the community has also been failing to keep the incubator status page up to date. The last status report listed was from 2012, but there have been status reports since. IIRC, someone has been added as a committer, but is not listed yet under project info. It looks to me like the community has actually shrunk since the last report, but I could be missing something. Would like to see S4 turn this around and grow its community and get ready to graduate, but I think graduation would be premature at this point. Re: draft of ASF board report
Thanks for putting it together, Oleg. Here are some suggestions for two parts of the proposal: - Any issued the IPMC should be aware of: I would include two things here. First, we have been asked about graduation. We haven't been able to conclude whether we should graduate or not. One particular problem we have been having is with growth of the community. I would say that in a recent e-mail thread, we have received very positive feedback from some developers, so we would like to remain in incubation for a little longer so that we can get some traction. Second, one of our mentors hasn't been responsive, so we need to find another mentor. - Has the community developed since the last report? I would say that we have been seeing some traffic on the mailing lists, mostly questions about how to use S4, but the code contributions have been fairly minimal. However, some developers have expressed interested in contributing so we expect to start receiving more contributions in the near future. To grow the community, we plan to have a closer interaction with other Apache projects like Gora and Helix. -Flavio On Sep 1, 2013, at 8:59 PM, Oleg Tikhonov wrote: > Hi folks, > > Please take a look at ASF draft board report. > > > S4 is a general-purpose, distributed, scalable, fault-tolerant, pluggable > platform that allows programmers to easily develop applications for > processing continuous unbounded streams of data. > > S4 has been incubating since 2011-09-26. > > Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation: > 1.
