Yes URL will remain the same. Our next steps are as follows.

1. Once the testing is over, we will list it as an official mirror on
Launchpad.

2. We will then aim to be an official mirror.


We are on a 1Gbps pipe, so that should be the maximum speed. I don't see
that saturating soon,but if that happens we will ask Mumbai IX to upgrade
us to 10Gbps.

And I just crossed 40+ mbps (my max connection speed) on my Jio 4G device
which happened to connect to the ideal LTE band 40 at 20 mhz bandwidth :-)

international mirrors/sites) even though I can get 20-40 mbps on some other
places like Youtube or speedtest.net.

Jio is giving me it's max speed (at least 20+ mbps) and I believe it should
be able to do 40-45 mbps when my device connects to the right LTE band.

Sadly, I don't have a "fast" connection like some folks with 100+ mbps
wired connections, so can't comment more because I already get the same
speeds on existing international Ubuntu mirrors which I mainly use Germany,
France and Sweden mirrors.

Anyone here has a fast 100+ mbps connection who can test and comment?

@Prakash - what do you mean "test before you go live" - will the URL remain
the same after you go live? Can you comment on which ISPs will get the max
speed via the Mumbai Internet Exchange? What is your max upload bandwidth /
speed limit capacity per user/connection? Let's say someone has Jio

This will be the new process, aiming to replace the current re approval
process. It aims to be less formal, more interactive and above all still
keep people motivated to be involved in the Ubuntu community.

Every team shall be known as a LoCoteam, teams that were previously known
as an “Approved LoCoteam” shall be known as a “Verified LoCoteam”. New
teams shall be a LoCoteam, teams do not have to be verified.  The term
Verified means that a  Launchpad team has been created, the team name
conforms to the correct naming standard and the team contact has signed the
Code of Conduct.

Every two years a team will present itself for a HealthCheck – This is
still beneficial to everyone involved, it gives the team a chance to show
how they are doing and also the council can catch up with the team.

*What is needed for a HealthCheck?*

*Create a Wiki with the activities of the period – Name the wiki page with
Name of your team plus the YEAR example – LoCoTeamVerificationApplication20XX
with the below details:*

   - Name of team
   - How many people are in the team
   - Link to your wiki page / Launchpad group page
   - Social Networks (if they have any of them).
   - Link to loco team portal page, Events page, Paste events page – this
   is a good reason to encourage teams to use the team portal as all of the
   information is there and saves duplication.
   - Photo Galleries of past events.
   - Tell us about your team, what you do, if you have Ubuntu members in
   your team, your current projects.
   - Guideline of what you plan on doing in the future.
   - Any meeting logs, if available.

*Teams will still remain verified this is just to check in and see how
things are doing,  If you can’t make a meeting, it can be done over
email/Bugs.*

In short, the overall process should remain pretty much the same as now.

Don't have anything to say much except -  creating a product is easier 
than creating a community. Sitting on the internet and sending messages 
doesn't create a user group. You have to physically organize meeting and 
workshops to get people interested.


Creating yet another group does not solve the purpose unless there is 
some concrete reasons. If you want to help out people, why don't you use 
NIT-Durgapur LUG (if you want proximity). Or ask them to come on 
##linux-india on irc.freenode.net


I have to say that in India apart from regional LUGs, there is hardly 
any mailing lists for distro agnostic discussion.

I don't find any killer advantage in this. Surely it does help in 
bringing people closer, but after a certain period, the interest might 
fade as people who use Distribution X might find that most of the 
questions are for distro X and Z.
"Group shouldn't be found to any distro" is idealism. Apart from LUGs 
groups bound to distro are more successful(dont have stats, but personal 
experience). Yes this is sad truth.


Groups independent of distro is good idea, but groups bound to distros 
are not evil.


I have seen many groups come and go, and learnt the hard way - Be a part 
of bigger group and advance it's growth. Or create Local LUG to promote 
FOSS at grassroots level.

have you checked out diaspora - the open(ish) source social networking
tool in which the data etc remains with the users and not the company.
It is also a self deployed social networking tool as opposed to a
globally implemented company driven one

it seems a good tool in the general set of tools required for online interaction

people who i know would not be bothered about where it came from, we , on

Reg. the font it self it looks nice but its a much over used hinglish font

No 1, would have been good but it makes the Ubuntu humans
indistinguishable, and they are what makes the original logo base so
unique.

BTW, is it a good idea to have such a detailed artwork like the chakra
in a logo? Does it work out well on all mediums?

variants need to be considered.
- Where are all the places we expect the logo to be used?
[Websites,favicons,T-shirts,posters,banners,..?]
- How do we use for different backgrounds?
- How well does it scale for all those sizes and does it still remain
distinct?
- Do we use the logo in combination with the words "Ubuntu-in" or
"Ubuntu-India" or "Ubuntu" (if used with the words logo is placed where)
or just the logo..?

Yeah , i can try that, i know it works because a friend did it on his
computer, unfortunately he's not in email contact right now so will know his
version only when he gets back. But he runs two windows versions as well as
one kubuntu. He is a windows person who dabbles with linux.

On my machine its too late - i already have grub - otherwise would have
given it a go, maybe what i will do is recover windows boot loader and then
try and see. Any way right now i have a warranty wallah machine to get my
hands dirty on.

There is a version of grub for Windows (grub4dos) which is a small
application (grldr.exe). Not sure how well it works with latest
versions of Windows.

The idea is to add an entry to Windows bootloader that will invoke
grub4dos. Then grub4dos can have it's own config file (copy of
grub.cfg from Ubuntu) which will let you boot Ubuntu. This way your
Windows bootloader will always be primary.

You might have come to know of Ubuntu getting its own font.

Today Mark Shuttleworth blogged about it [0] and wants all of us to let
them know that we want the Ubuntu-font-family to support our language.
He has also suggested directions for this.

This is list of image mirrors i.e. websites that host CD/DVD images.
HNS and other Indian mirrors are archive mirrors i.e. they host
packages only.

Note: You can use Indian mirrors when downloading ISO using jigdo.

A 2 GB Ubuntu should rock.

Do you have a separate home partition - this makes sure a) your user data is
kept relatively safe from the OS and and needs to upgrade / change b) makes
managing and backing up easier.
To check if you have a separate home open a terminal (Applications
-Accessories -Terminal )
and type
-$ df -h
(the -$ is indicative of the terminal prompt)

in your result you should get something like
$ df -h

Hello all, recently installed ubuntu 10.04 on my lenovo notebook.i must say it 
has given a fresh breath of life to my ailing machine suffering from vista !  i 
realise after getting to run ubuntu that i don.t really need to invest in 
windows and i'm able to pretty much do everything with ubuntu. At 2gb ram its 
really made my computer faster . The boot up is a breeze. Multi tasking is 
excellent. I.m still exploring the tools and software available to download. 
Will appreciate if anyone could send of Must Haves . Seems this is going to be 
a lot of fun. Regards manpreet

I  would tell u to get the gstreamer packages from the Ubuntu repositories.
There are gstreamer-good gstreamer-bad and gstreamer-ugly packages that
solve my problem. As you are new to Ubuntu, you can get the Ubuntu
repositories over Package-Manager.

Does the device pop up as a cdrom device ?? on the desktop

@ Moz to find out the details he is asking
for vendor and product id open a terminal and do
-$ lsusb -v
 on the output go up and find the device listed and note the details

if you have any doubts then redirect the text to a txt file using the
following command

-$ lsusb -v > lsusbputdatehere.txt

this file "lsusbputdatehere.txt will be found in your home directory

Also if you can post the out put of dmesg
$ dmesg
but do this just after you plug in the device

the last few lines of dmesg will show how Kubuntu is treating the device.

after that do what Moz has said.

if errors continue the post mail with extracts of the above commands

When it is detected as CD-ROM, reboot the computer, and then check if it is
still detected as a CD, if it does, again reboot.

After that you might have to run

sudo modprobe usbserial product=productid vendor=vendorid

then check if /dev/ttyUSB0 and /dev/ttyUSB1 exist or not;

And then run

sudo wvdialconf

then add the correct phone number, username and password in /etc/wvdial.conf
and check if a line like

Stupid Mode = 1

exists in /etc/wvdial.conf.

If all this works out properly, then try

sudo wvdial

and this should connect you to internet.

There is apparently another way of doing this using the Netowrk Manager,
which I have never used, but on the face of it, it does look simple.

Another suggestion is Ultimate 2.4 (based on ubuntu) this is
definitely the one stop install for all issues, It runs everything
with about 7 gig of software packed into its , 2.4 gig DVD

i think for newbies to Ubuntu this id definitely one of the best
distros to show off.

Its a bit hard to find a torrent site to download but its definitely
worth the search and wait.

The 2.4 Ultimate contains enough software to blow the mind away
(somewhat like Knoppix !) and on the one machine i installed on an HP
Pavilion DV5 series - everything worked. Ultimate 2.4 - released a few
weeks after the original so it contains some updates and critical
recitifications - like the working Network Manager which picks up many
of the mobile broadband cards and "it simply works"

A couple of clarifications:
1. Media Players are installed even in *buntu by default.  What's
missing are the proprietary codecs for playing mp3, mov, avi and rmvb
files, which is because of Ubuntu and Debian's policy to stick to Open
Source formats, and let users decide, as per their preferences and
choices.
2. Linux Mint does not adhere to the DFSG (Debian Free Software
Guidelines) completely, and hence, bundles these codecs in the basic
install.  Hence, you can watch/listen to these proprietary formats
right after install.
3. As the OP (original poster) is a Kubuntu user, I'd suggest that he
install kubuntu-restricted-extras instead of ubuntu-restricted-extras.

@OP: Most of the inner workings of Ubuntu and Kubuntu are the same, so
you can easily apply the same suggestions that are given for ubuntu,
to kubuntu.  However, there are a few slight differences here and
there, which you'll learn as you go along.  Please don't hesitate to
ask more questions on the list. :)

2. http://kubuntuguide.org
They are wikis, and Karmic has been out for just ~3 weeks, so users
will be adding more tips and tricks.  Do keep checking them regularly

I am a regular Windows user and havent used any other OS till now. Yesturday i 
downloaded Kubuntu Ver 9.10 Karmic Kola and have installed it in my pc and have 
made dual booting with windows. But i am finding Kubuntu hard to operate since 
none of my softwares are installing. Even the MP3 music files and vedio files 
are also not opening. How can i solve this problems ? I need someone like you 
to guide me since i have never operated Linux.

#ubuntu is a very high traffic channel,it would be easier to use
##beginners-help for answers,if no answers can be found there,you might want

Not every application is listed in Add/Remove. Use
System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager.
