Interesting! I was thinking of comparing some task timings with another box which has an Athlon 2000+ 1.6 GHz CPU, which is the speed reported, but will check that also. I was actually planning to build up a box from scratch with an Intel CPU, but came across this one at Newegg for a price I couldn't pass up (it's refurbished, but other than the shorter warrantee it looked new). I already checked this P4 to see if it could. No "lm" flag. :-( I had to really hunt for that 32-bit/64-bit flag. I gotta answer this. I would be called a traitor by all my friends in Rio Rancho, NM where the Intel plant is located, if I went with AMD. ;-) Actually, I think AMD and Intel processors are very much compatible with one another as far as software goes. For a while, I ran an AMD computer, and it was much faster than the Intel version with the same speed. Not so sure now though. Whimperons were sorta slow. I got past them as fast as possible. Made the mistake of buying several, but they didn't last more than a year in service due to performance. The only similar thing I've seen: One of my kids is running an AMD Sempron 1.7GHz and it reports as a 1000MHz. All 32-bit stuff there, OpenSuSE-11.0. On the computer power-up screen is says Sempron 1.7GHz, so I think I got all the motherboard settings right. One downside is that the apps tend to use about twice as much memory as they used to, even Xastir, so make sure you have enough memory.
