I've so far tried Pidgin, which seems to hang eternally when I try to
connect, and I've tried looking for alternatives such as ymessenger but it
seems they have been retired from portage.
Does anyone have any advice on this subject? At the moment I'm having to
VNC

Why is gaim no longer in portage? Is it dead upstream?
It has been renamed to Pidgin in 2007 to prevent some legal
issues with AOL and their AIM product.
From Michael Sullivan's comment shall I
to
do about that because it's gone from my gnome volume control. Sound in
audacious and pidgin still works though. What should I do?

could use Pidgin, or just try updating kopete by itself (and its
dependant libs, of course). If KDE3 is in its down directory, then this
shouldn't be hard to do.
Here's a little update. Yahoo won't even let me sign in anymore. It
just sits there.

is now called pidgin. It's not a new product really,
just a version bump that is a name change.
It was hard masked in portage very recently. Unfortunately for gaim
users, the upgrade consists of unmerge gaim, merge pidgin, import
settings.
OK, I can surely do that, but shouldn't portage

Kopete has always done this for me, it's incredibly annoying. If you
