so did you fully remove it along with all the modules? Another possible
solution would be to try a newer version of xf86-video-nouveau and
libdrm. The output of 'lspci -k' might give you a hint.

I've been using the nouveau video driver for a while, but lately video
has been freezing with X at 100% CPU and the only way out seems to be
ssh'ing in and rebooting.
Not that it will help with your bug, but I'm curious to know what video

To be truthful, I really don't know the details.
My major overriding need is for the video driver to be in sync with the
rest of my software at all times so that portage can just do the right
thing (exactly like all
log file for more detail.
You could try to install a recent kernel (3.1.5 for me) and enable
the CONFIG_DRM_NOUVEAU=y (it's a staging driver, just search for it
by entering / in the make menuconfig environment).
Then re-emerge the x11-drivers/xf86-video-nouveau driver.

commandline. Try that, reboot and cross your fingers. ;)

if you use nvidia binary, turn off all nvidia graphics related stuff in the
kernel and to be sure nothing screws you over - unmerge nouveau.
