That's cool! The JAMES project desperately need some new contributor
and some evolution, so you're welcome! Just take in mind that most
developers with good knowledge of JAMES here are a lot busy, so if I
can give you a personal suggestion:
1) Keep your messages short to the point. Critical stuff first, once
you have answers to critical stuff you ask trivial stuff.
2) Better subjects/threads usage: the subject should be a good summary
of the message goal. Most people here will only open a message after
reading the subject and understanding what the message is about. Also
try to avoid html email (we are old style and use text plain as much
as possibile) and try to use threads (reply when the topic didn't
change instead of creating new messages).

You are a very interesting person and I'm sure your contribution will
be very helpful for the project!

My opinion is that you should checkout james trunk as it is almost a
new product when compared to 2.3.x and there are big ongoing
refactorings (Norman's trying to finally get rid of Avalon). Check out
it, and try to run it.. report bugs and patches.
