I retired a system similar to yours. I had a 400 MHz P-II that was running v2.x WUs in about 31 hrs with the graphics enabled. The times dropped to 15-18 hrs with the graphics disabled. Version 2.x WUs ran about 30% faster that v3.x WUs do now. I have several questions. 1) What operating system are you using? 2) Do you have other programs running that are actively crunching numbers or doing I/O? 3) Do you have power saving enabled that could drop the speed on your processor and/or turn off your disk drives? If you are running NT4/Win2K/XP, you can start the task manager. Go to processes and see what processes are using CPU time. If you are running Win9x, then it is more challenging. You will need to find a third party program that will monitor CPU activity. Something is seriously wrong with your setup. I would check your BIOS. Also, I would get a benchmark program and see if your computer is running at the expected speed. You might find a program on ZDnet or maybe you or one of your friends will have a CD with a benchmark. ZD used to send them to people who (re)subscribed to their magazines. Just a thought, go into your BIOS and make sure your L1 and L2 caches are enabled. I had a computer that would sometimes turned them off when it crashed hard. Bruce 20,000+...
