Breaking news - The article below includes an interview with Khaled Daoed, one of the people suspected of organising the deadly sievx voyage. It appeared in the Swedish newspaper Arbetarbladet yesterday. In a second article in the same newspaper it was stated that 'the Australian police will most probably come to Sweden to fetch [Daoed] within three weeks]. --------- 'I will never go there alive' Helena Nyman Arbetarbladet 10 October 2003 [translated from the Swedish by DP] Khaleed Daoed does not understand the charges made against him SANDVIKEN The extradition decision that Khaleed Daoed from Sandviken feared, came yesterday. 'I don't understand the accusations', he says and shakes his head in despair. The aim of his life has been to get his wife and four children to Sweden, now he fears that he might never see them again. When we meet Khaleed Daoed on Thursday at the prison in Gävle where he has been incarcerated for five months, he has still not received the Government's final extradition decision. He is well aware that the chances of him staying in Sweden are minimal. THIN AND HAGGARD It is a thin and haggard man who walks into the visiting room. 20 kilograms lighter than the first time I saw him at the proceedings in the district court, Sandviken in May, a few days after he had been arrested outside his apartment in Vallhov, Sandviken. HE TELLS HIS SIDE OF THE STORY He talks of how he has both consciously and subconsciously starved himself. Subconsciously, because he has felt extremely ill and consciously through the hunger strike and attempted suicide, which was the only way he could avoid the confinement he has had to endure. ONLY ALLOWED TO TALK TO HIS LAWYER In the last three months he has only been allowed to speak to his lawyer, the police and the public prosecutor. 'It nearly drove me mad.' he says. He is now allowed to speak occasionally with his family over the phone. They are in Jordan, waiting to be reunited with him - a reunion that might never happen. 'It is that thought that's breaking me down. To get my family here to Sweden is all that matters to me. Without them, I might as well die.' he says. FLED FROM IRAQ Khaleed Daoed is a Mandaean, who has fled from Iraq and has obtained a residence permit with help from the UN. The UN is aware of the accusations that were aimed at Khaleed Daoed directly after the accident, and the Indonesian authorities released him when they could not prove that he was behind the refugee disaster. 'I don't understand why am accused again. The survivors recognised me and my name but they never accused me of smuggling. The other two who were released at the same time live free lives now, but the authorities have arrested me. Why?' asks Khaleed and explains that he helped the refugees with translation, contact with the authorities, with hospital visits and all things the refugees needed in Indonesia. DENIES SMUGGLING 'But I am not a smuggler. I arrived in Indonesia as a refugee myself and was tricked by smugglers who took my money.' He thinks that the evidence the Australian authorities have against him is weak. 'There are people that accuse me, but there are also people that have already acquitted me.' After fleeing from Iraq, the idea was to be reunited with his family. This was about to happen when he was arrested by the police in Sandviken. 'The papers were ready. They were on their way from Jordan, but all was stopped when this happened' he says, crying. THE WORST THAT COULD HAPPEN During the interview, he says over and over that to be extradited to Australia is the worst that could happen. 'I WILL NEVER GO THERE ALIVE' He gives three reasons why. The first is that his family will suffer; the second is that the Australian authorities can send him back to Iraq and the third reason is that he is afraid of reprisals from survivors and relatives of the deceased in Australia. DOESN'T UNDERSTAND But above all Khaleed Daoed can't understand why Sweden first accepts him as a refugee and then extradites him 'I'd rather sit in prison for twenty years here in Sweden, wrongly accused, than one year in prison in Australia.' ---------- "Jag kommer aldrig att resa dit levande" Helena Nyman Arbetarbladet 10 October 2003 Khaleed Daoed från Sandviken förstår inte anklagelserna mot honom SANDVIKEN I går kom det utlämningsbeslut som Khaleed Daoed från Sandviken fruktat. - Jag förstår inte anklagelserna, säger han och skakar förtvivlat på huvudet. Att få sin fru och fyra barn till Sverige var meningen med hans liv. Nu fruktar han att aldrig få se dem igen. När vi träffar Khaleed Daoed på häktet i Gävle på torsdagen, där han suttit inlåst i fem månader, har han ännu inte nåtts av regeringens definitiva beslut att utlämna honom till Australien. Han är ändå väl medveten om att chanserna att få stanna i Sverige är minimala. Smal och tärd Det är en smal och tärd man som kliver in i besöksrummet. 20 kilo lättare än första gången jag såg honom vid förhandlingen i Sandvikens tingsrätt i maj dagarna efter att polisen gripit honom utanför den egna lägenheten i Vallhov. Nu ska han få ge sin version. Han berättar hur han både medvetet och omedvetet svält sig. Omedvetet för att han mår dåligt, medvetet för att hungerstrejk och självmordsförsök var hans enda sätt att slippa vara isolerad från omvärlden. Fick bara tala med akvokat I tre månader fick han inte prata med andra än sin advokat och poliser och åklagare. - Det gjorde mig nästan tokig, säger han. Nu kan han ibland prata med sin familj på telefon. De är i Jordanien i väntan på att återförenas med Khaleed Daoed - en återförening som nu kanske aldrig blir av. - Det är det som bryter ner mig. Att få min familj till Sverige är allt som betyder något. Utan dem kan jag lika gärna dö, säger han. Flydde från Irak Khaleed Daoed är mandé som flytt från Irak och i dag har han ett uppehållstillstånd i Sverige med hjälp av FN. FN kände till de anklagelser som redan en gång riktats mot Khaleed Daoed direkt efter båtolyckan, men de indonesiska myndigheterna släppte honom när de inte kunde bevisa att han låg bakom flyktingkatastrofen. - Jag förstår inte varför jag anklagas igen. Överlevande då kände igen mig och mitt namn som en som fanns i närheten men de pekade aldrig ut mig som smugglare. De andra två som släpptes samtidigt som mig lever fria i dag, men mig har de tagit. Varför? frågar sig Khaleed och förklarar att han hjälpte de asylsökande med att tolka, med kontakter med myndigheter, med sjukhusbesök och allt annat som behövdes i Indonesien dit alla kommit som flyktingar. Förnekar smugglingen - Men jag är ingen smugglare. Jag tog mig själv till Indonesien med hjälp av smugglare som lurade mig och tog mina pengar. De bevis han hittills sett från Australiens sida tycker han är mycket svaga. - Det är personer som pekat ut mig men det finns fler personer som redan friat mig. Efter flykten från Irak var tanken att återförenas med familjen. Det höll nästan på att hända när Khaleed greps av polisen i Sandviken. - Papperen var klara. De var på väg hit från Jordanien, men allt stoppades när det här hände, berättar han gråtande. Det värsta som kan hända Att utlämnas till Australien är det värsta som kan hända, upprepar han hela tiden under intervjun. - Jag kommer aldrig att resa dit levande. En anledning är att hans familj då aldrig kan få det bra, en annan att han fruktar att de australiensiska myndigheterna kan utvisa honom tillbaka till Irak och den tredje anledningen är att han är rädd för den blodshämnd som överlevande till de omkomna kan komma att utkräva om han kommer till Australien. Förstår inte Men framför allt kan inte Khaleed Daoed förstå varför Sverige först tagit emot honom som flykting och sedan lämnar ut honom. - Jag sitter hellre oskyldigt dömd i Sverige i 20 år än döms till ett års fängelse i Australien.
