[speedtouch] Can't upload microcode

Hello,
I applied step by step the "SpeedTouchUSB-HOWTO using Benoit
Papillault's
OpenSource drivers", managed to get all modprobes ok, but I'm stuck with
:
# modem_run -m -f  /my-path-to/mgmt.o

returned :
usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
usbdevfs/ USBDEVFS_BULK failed dev 2 ep 0x85 len 512 ret -110
... and timeout 2 or 3 times again, and then back to prompt.

since the diodes were green and fixed, I tried to carry on with :
# pppd call adsl
returned nothing

and finally :
# ifconfig ppp0
returned "blah blah there's no ppp0..."
and 'ifconfig' alone gives just 127.0.0.1 arghhh !

And yet I got :
- Alcatel mgmt.o version 1.3.4
- Sourceforge Speedtouch CVS_03_03_2002
- Debian Woody 3.0.22
- Kernel recompiled as 2.4.18

Can't believe a Skate will hassle a Penguin ?!
