Consider leap years ... day number 60 means February 29 in a leap year and March 01 in other years. The last day of the year is day 366 in a leap year and day 365 in other years. Comparing day numbers that relate to different years seems not very meaningful. Grouping by day numbers that relate to different years seems likewise not very meaningful (for day numbers greater than 59).
