Thank you to everyone for you input and ideas! I'm concerned I might have given you the perception that all teachers are embracing comprehension strategy instruction in my district. This is certainly not the case - Last year was the first year for huge change of direction for our district, so many teachers were exposed to the strategies for the first time. I realize now, that what I'm wrestling with has more to do with how to help teachers see beyond the strategies as "an end" and move towards a "means to an end". The "quick fix" many schools have adopted is the monthly strategy focus..... and many teachers have expressed concern that "we already taught them last year". So needless to say, my work continues.....
Several of you have mentioned that it has been your own journey of working through strategy instruction that has helped you to better understand what you do, and where to go next. I certainly agree, as this has been my experience as well. I just hope that when strategy instruction is more or less "imposed" on a district, that teachers will begin to see the value - sequenced or not - and strive to continue to deepen their teaching in this area (although having read many of the posts on the MOT thread, I feel very lucky that this is where we are headed!). Bonita - you had asked if I have opportunities to lead discussions and/or meetings.... We have literacy coaches in each of our schools, and my role is more directly linked to supporting them. However, I am more closely linked to a few schools that are really struggling. Baby steps, in our circle of influence! Looking forward to Part II!
