First of all, I want to say a big "Thank You!!!" to Steph and Anne for this new edition. The parts that you have added are helping me deepen my understanding of strategy instruction, and are just the breath of fresh wind that I needed to be once again INSPIRED! Here was my favorite part of Chapter 6: pg. 83 STR Stop Think React, in the context of having conversations, had me thinking. My thinking on the STR was to make the acronym STIR instead(Stop - Think about the Info - React) in order to be better prepared to learn from each other in the conversation that will follow. I would tell the kids that it is like STIRring up their own thinking with the words in the text in order to determine such things as: what do I think is important to know/remember and why do I think that what are my own questions that I am hoping the conversation will help me to figure out what was new learning for me what misconceptions were cleared up for me STIR up your thinking with the text, and off you go to have conversations with others, all prepared to share and to learn from others! I think that I might teach this lesson when I am teaching students how to have conversations. Everyone needs to have something to bring to the table. I'm also thinking that this doesn't just have to happen with a read-aloud. We could model it that way, and have the students do the guided practice during the read-aloud, and then have the kids practice independently on their own with multiple copies of different articles, meeting back up with a group of say 4-6 for their interactive conversation, ending with a group share of how being prepared for the conversation and having the conversation itself, helped them to understand the text better and let them know what their remaining questions were.
