I have experienced the same kind of issue with questions from 8th graders.  
Finally it has occurred to me to write these off topic questions down.  
Sometimes they are very good.  I'll save the questions for a more appropriate 
time.  I think that some of them might make excellent research topics if 
students are really interested, but what seems so important today is not always 
important next week.
