A second thing I thought about concerning this chapter was the inferring lesson with the chart showing background, text, then inference. I would start with character emotions were I reading fiction with students because I think this is an easy place to demonstrate inference. I would pick a place in reading where a character is (for example) standing with hands on hips, glaring, eyes furrowed, and put that in the tet evidence list and ask students have they ever seen anyone do this (background knowledge) followed by--what is the author trying to "show" us? Feelings are visible in almost any fiction reading and so seem to me an easy place to begin with inference, though I wouldn't want students to get stuck there. It also offers a great cross over into lessons on show-don't tell writing.
