For example, after I read Big Pumpkin at Halloween and we talked about how 'the little thing made the difference", my Kindergarteners recognized the same theme in The Turnip, The Mitten and Who Sank the Boat. (and maybe others, can't remember right now.) That theme is very important to five year olds! They may need a little guidance at first, but once they start looking for themes, they find them on their own.
