Dear Friends,

I wish to inform you about the newly born Contemporary International
Bibliographical Fund of Gnomonics. This Fund is born to fulfil the desire of
one of our members to save his big book collection of gnomonics.

At the beginning, we thought to create a project with the name of our Italian
Association, but suddenly I thought that maybe a project like this should not
just be Italian, because gnomonics are everywhere. Actually, only the fact that
this mailing list is followed by gnomonists from all over the world means that
gnomonics does not have any borders.

So, months ago, I got in contact with the secretaries of many foreign gnomonic
groups to obtain preliminary feedback. Some of them were enthusiastic, some
others, not too much, but nevertheless I still think that this project can be
useful in the future. So I have worked to make it happen.

Now the opening of the Fund is official, so I am pleased to let all of you know
about it

The first problem was that many Libraries do not want modern books unless they
are very rare or are mostly academic. But suddenly I found ears open enough to
listen to the ideas of this project in the director of the Ravenna historical
Classense Library. That is the Library that many of you visited in 2004 when
there was the Italian Tour of Gnomonics. The Library has a lot of old books
about that subject and also a very important collection of Renaissance
sundials. They agreed to open the Bibliographical Fund of contemporary books
about gnomonics (of course they accept old books too ;-) ). In this way we will
start the first Fund completely devoted to our subject. Everyone will be able
to obtain from the Library loans or photocopies of articles and other material,
some of which is really rare or simply not easy to find.

Of course I know that the Fund can be more useful for people living in Italy
than for those living outside, but I would like to let you know that this Fund
does not have an Italian definition. Its name is Fondo Contemporaneo
Internazionale di Gnomonica (Contemporary International Fund of Gnomonics ) so
you don't have to read "Italy" but "World". The fact that this centre is now in
an Italian Library is unimportant. This Fund will be useful, not so much for us
who are living today, but mostly for the gnomonist who will be alive tomorrow.

This Fund is only at its beginning.

To help it to grow it is up to us. Everyone, from Italy or anywhere, can send
books (written by them or by others), booklets or CDs to the Library to enlarge
the newborn Bibliographical Fund. It would be wonderful if from now on a copy
of every gnomonic publication could be sent to the Classense Library.

To send publications to this Library it would be better to contact the man who
organises the project, at least to know if the material that we would like to
send is what they require.

You can contact by email: Roberto Ferruzzi (rferru...@classense.ra.it) and send
the book to:

Istituzione Biblioteca Classense

Via Baccarini, 3

48121 Ravenna (Italy)

If anyone needs more information you can write to me (marna...@libero.it).
