Dear friends and collegues, Fred Sawyer wrote me just few days ago explane me his misunderstanding of the word "Fund". Here what he wrote me and with his permission : "Hi Mario, I should point out that some of my original lack of enthusiasm probably resulted from a translation issue. It was only recently made clear to me that 'Fondo' may be better translated as 'Collection' - that makes it clear that you're looking for contributions of books, CDs, etc. The word 'Fund' in English is almost always associated with money. If you set up a fund, that suggests in English that you are looking for donations of money. If you start a collection, that's something different."
Yes, Fred is right. In Italy the word "Fondo" can mean many things: "bottom", "deep", "a certant amount of money in a bank" and many other things, it depend by the sentence. In our case with the word Fund we mean a bibliographical collection. Maibe you didn't misunderstand the meaning of the word Fund in my last email, but nevertheless I preferred to explane it clearer. The International Fund Of Gnomonics is about books and not money. It is an international collection of contemporary (from, let say, 1960 on) publications and multimidia productions devoted to gnomonic, or with some gnomonic aspects. Of course they can't accept everything (example, books already kept in the library, pamflets, elementary books), for this reason is better to contact first by mail or by phone the man that maintains the Fund in the Classense Library.
