Rigid heddles existed earlier, although I don't know of any Viking-related 
ones.  According to _Textile Manufacture in the Northern Roman Provinces_, 
there are the remains of at least three from the Roman period, including 
one (still?) in the museum at Newcastle.

Hoffmann does report on a long tradition of the Sami using them, although I 
think the earliest reference in that case is 17th century.
