Hi Everyone,
I hope you will allow an important announcement about ply-splitting --
Please forward this to anyone who might be interested.
Erroll Pires, expert ply-splitter from Ahmedabad, India, will be coming to
Portland in October. Contemporary Crafts Museum and Gallery is bringing
Erroll to Portland for the opening of the ply-splitting exhibition on
October 2, and he will probably stay for about three weeks. We also hoping
to arrange a workshop at the Oregon College of Art and Craft, and he will
be available to travel, particularly in the western US, for workshops and
lectures.
I met Erroll at Spliterati in England in 2001 -- he is a delightful person,
has been ply-splitting for almost 20 years, and has studied extensively
with the girth makers. His slide talk at Spliterati was really inspiring.
In our 2-day workshop there, we made a bag that was completely formed with
twined linkings so it produces a stretchy ply-split fabric. I think some of
you have seen the one I made. There is a photo of Erroll and of the bag on
my website -- go to the Ply-Splitting Gallery and click on "My experiences
and photos from Spliterati". Also two of his bags are shown under "Artists
Exhibiting at Expanding the Girths".
You can also see some of Erroll's work, including his full-length dresses
in the Ply-Splitting Gallery at <www.weavershand.com>. There is a photo of
one of the dresses in the March/April issue of Fiberarts magazine, on page 54.
Please get in touch with me if you would like to arrange a workshop with
Erroll. It's a great opportunity, and I hope you will be able to take
advantage of it. You would only need to pay round-trip airfare from
Portland, and you can arrange payment for instruction and other details
directly with Erroll.
Take care,
Linda
