Years ago I made some TW friendship-type bracelets and the best way I found to finish them involved hand sewing twice across each end and cutting the ends short.  A short, fuzzy fringe was left at each end.  Then I sewed 2 pieces of velcro to fasten it.  I also tried those small metal snaps, available at fabric stores, which also worked well.  Not the most elegant solution, but it avoided a thick knot on the wrist.
I used 5/2 or10/2 perle cotton and 16 to 20 tablets, which gave about a 1 inch width.  I was inspired by the ubiquitous WWJD bracelets popular a few years back.  I made my own version with all question marks, as well as other more skeptical messages.
