> THOUSANDS LIGHT THE SYDNEY SKY AS 2000 OLYMPIC GAMES OPENING CEREMONY UNFOLDS

In music and in words, with smoke and fire, from the populous coasts to the
rugged, empty Outback, Australia's Olympic organizers thrilled the 110,000
spectators and an estimated four billion television viewers with a spectacular
opening ceremony on Friday evening to herald the start of the 2000 Olympic
Games in Sydney. Flamespinners, horsemen, figures real and mythic from
Australia's past, 12,697 performers in all -- including some Aborigine women
who had walked for five days to take part in the ceremony -- combined to bring
the flavor of an MGM musical epic to the Olympics.

Germany was braced for an escalation of the protests over high fuel prices on
Friday as blockades of oil refineries and go-slows on major roads spread across
Europe. The Netherlands, the Republic of Ireland, Greece, Hungary and Poland
were also expecting direct action to disrupt daily life. And in the United
Kingdom and Belgium, where most blockades have now ended, businesses, commuters
and supermarkets struggled to recover from the paralyzing effect of days of
fuel starvation.

> CALIFORNIA'S VANDENBERG AFB REMAINS OPEN AS WILDFIRE RAGES

A wildfire that has burned 11,000 acres at Vandenberg Air Force Base in
Southern California did not force the base to be closed and evacuated, a

> VIRGINIA EXECUTION CARRIED OUT, ITALY OUTRAGED

Despite protests in his mother's homeland and a plea for clemency from the
Vatican, Derek Rocco Barnabei was executed by injection Thursday in Virginia
for killing his teen-age girlfriend seven years ago. The execution was carried

freshman he had been dating.

Better-than-expected earnings from a leading software maker, Oracle, and
another report gauging inflation greet U.S. stock investors Friday. Early

A landmark China trade bill that could transform Sino-U.S. relations headed for
final passage after months of delay as Senate leaders set a Sept. 19 vote.
Senators said Thursday there was no doubt the legislation, granting permanent
normal trade relations (PNTR) to China, would pass by a large margin, in a
victory for big business and President Clinton. The last major hurdle was
cleared Wednesday when senators rejected a controversial plan to impose
sanctions on China for its alleged role in weapons proliferation.

Astronomers have developed a design for an X-ray telescope so staggeringly
powerful that it could see black holes gulping matter in distant galaxies.

NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. A full-size
instrument based on the new design would be a million times more powerful than
today's observatories, the researchers said.
