Another thought to share: As it's been noted prviously,many students refer
to themselves as "poor test takers" as if it were a personality trait. When they
make this kind of global attribution about themselves, it appears to be "out of
their control." One of the many things I dislike about the concept of
personality is that it treats aspects of human behavior that are more than
likely related to changeable behaviors as if they were immutable traits. It
becomes another verson of the power of expectation to create self-fulfilling
prophecies.
By referring to test-taking skills and asking students to think about
"test-taking skills" and "study skills" we encourage them to consider that they
have a whole lot more control than they've been acknowledging, and can change
this aspect of themselves (as they can many other aspects of themselves
too.)
