You need to have the appropriate drivers. When the module is loaded the driver looks for the NIC and if it is found a message is returned. Some NICs are there but others require the driver module to be added to the disk. It's been a while since I looked but I thought the scripts tried to load all the modules on the disk. Not recognizing your NIC could happen if you use a card that needs a different driver than the stock set.
