Ditto. There are a couple of band-aids I use: I try to remember to
write down my numerical IP each morning on a post-it so that if name
resolution doesn't work I can still get in. If I forget, my
dynamically-assigned box periodically queries a server and I sometimes
have to look in the server's logs to find my IP.

Also, I don't think that waiting 20 mins to restart samba helps;
rather, wait just 5 minutes after restarting and if it didn't take,
try restarting again. I haven't gone so far as to write a cron job to
restart samba if it detects an incorrect DNS entry, but I've thought
about doing so.

Beyond that, however, ITS has promised that the upcoming deployment of
Microsoft Active Directory will cure all DNS problems and give us
correct authoritative DNS results with no time lag. I hope so, and
I'm looking forward to it. Perhaps an ITS member of the list could
give us an update on the AD project?
