Just fiddled around with alsamixer until the sound stopped sounding flat.
I'm sure the individual settings (Sigmatel and such) are higly dependent
on the card being used. That I don't really remember exactly and I'm not
at my computer. A lot of the problem appeared to be the complexity
introduced by a surround-sound sound card (even though I don't have the
speakers.)

The init scripts that Peter refered me to just save the settings you have
I believe. Seems to me that by default it should not be mute, and not be
all messed up in general... hopefully this will get ironed out. I'm sure
it will when ALSA goes more main stream, which should happen in a few
months.

A neat program is amixer, which is basically a command line interface to
alsamixer. Using KDE's 3.2 key mapper program I was actually able to put
that silly Windows Key to use to bind keys to increase/decrease and mute
sound.

And just for kicks, here is a link I found from osnews.com. It's a Java
Operating System:
http://jnode.sourceforge.net/screenshots.html

I think there is something wrong about "starting org.jnode.driver.ide",
though it seems like I've heard of java-based cellphones... I'm not sure
how fundamental Java is to their OS though.
