Fixes for TUSCANY-2178 and TUSCANY-2179 in 1.2

I just made two small fixes for TUSCANY-2178 and 2179, committed in 
trunk under SVN revisions r643318 and r643319.

The fixes are really isolated so I'd like to merge them into the 1.2 
branch if possible.
