[Bug 221843] [NEW] xvidtune largely useless these days

Public bug reported:

I've just installed 8.04 and have a video problem. The monitor's image
is set on the left margin with about an inch of unused space on the
right.

My monitor is somewhat old, a Samsung SyncMaster-550s. (It works
perfectly witn Win2K.)

This is simply a ModeLine issue. Unfortunately, I don't have an old
ModeLine available for the monitor, so I need to generate one.

In the old days, one used xvidtune for this. xvidtune seems to be
totally useless in Ubuntu. The same problem exists in 6.06, which I
currently use as my desktop. Any use of the "Test" or "Apply" buttons
produces a diagnostic message: "Sorry: you have requested a modeline
that is not possible or is not supported by your hardware
configuration."

I've verified that this is not a permissions problem. With a bit of
effort I managed to get an X session going as root with no change in
xvidtune behavior.

I've googled and searched the Ubuntu forums on this and there doesn't
seem to be anything useful.
