Hello Everyone-
I am forwarding on an email about changes in the recycling program. I have
held off sending this out until I confirmed the starting date with a live
human at the Streets Department which I have finally succeeded in doing
today. So starting next week we will be recycling on trash day not the day
before. I think this is a step in the right direction and should increase
the recycling take because it is easier to remember. According to Jean at
the Streets Department, we should all be receiving a yellow door hanger with
this information prior to next week's pickup on Wednesday, but just in case
we don't you heard about it here.

FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
City Changes Recycling Day to Same Day
As Trash
Every Other Week
To help make it easier for residents to recycle, the Streets Department
will collect recyclables on the same day as trash, on an every other week
basis, beginning the week of May 13. "The City's recycling
program has been confusing and inconvenient over the years. This
operational change makes it simpler and easier for residents to remember
when to set out recyclables," said Streets Commissioner William M.
Johnson. "We hope to see an increase in the number of people
recycling as a result of the change to same day as trash every other
week."
If you do not know which week your recycling day falls in, help is on the
way. Bright yellow door hangers with lots of helpful information
will be distributed to every single-family dwelling and every apartment
building with six or less units throughout the city. The door
hangers include a calendar that shows you which weeks to put your
recyclables out.
Commissioner Johnson also wants residents
to understand that the frequency of curbside collection will not
change. If your recycling day is currently every week, it will
continue to be every week. If you receive trash collection twice a
week, you will now recycle on your first trash collection day of the
week.
Johnson also explained that the goal of the increased recycling effort is
to decrease the costs the city pays for waste disposal. "Waste
disposal costs are rapidly increasing in Eastern Pennsylvania. This
could cost the city millions of dollars in the near future. Every
ton of recyclable material that is diverted from trash collection is a
ton that the city does not have to pay to have land filled or
incinerated."
Recycling Coordinator David Robinson added, "The City has produced
radio and newspaper advertisements informing residents that now recycling
day is the same as trash day every other week. New features are
also being added to the Phila.gov/streets website to make it easier for
residents to find out where to get bins and which week is your recycling
week."
Commissioner Johnson also thanks the residents who are making the effort
to recycle.
