*By Francis Kagolo and Andante Okanya* FIVE Makerere University students’ leaders are facing expulsion over addressing press conferences. The students, who have been given up to Friday to apologise or be expelled, are accused of breaking university regulations that bar all students from talking to the media about university issues, according to the dean of students, John Ekudu-Adoku. The five include academic affairs minister Ritah Nansubuga, campus affairs minister Lawrence Sewino and Anthony Waddimba, a second-year student of economics. Others are Shaban Senkubuge and Ismail Kigongo, both guild council representatives. Ekudu last week wrote to the students asking them to give reasons why the acting vice-chancellor, Prof. Venasius Baryamureeba, should not expel them. Ekudu said the five students’ action incited other students to stage a strike recently where some property was destroyed. During a meeting with Ekudu yesterday, the students’ leaders defended themselves that they addressed the media as one of the measures aimed at promoting the welfare of fellow students as required by their guild constitution. A source said Ekudu dismissed their defence and gave them up to Friday to apologise or be expelled. However, internal sources said the University Senate was opposed to the expulsion, saying the university disciplinary council, not the vice-chancellor, had powers to suspend a student. The senate is the chief academic organ of the institution. Meanwhile, the university councillor to Kampala City Council, Bernard Luyiga, on Friday petitioned the Human Rights Commission to help the students.
