I've been collecting all the posts to read at a later date, when I have time to
read the book...but alas, it doesn't look like that will happen this school
year! But I had to respond to Jan's post.
I'm in the same boat as Jan. I used to use rewards, when I didn't know or
understand that kids would work for the intrinsic satisfaction doing a good job
brings.
If you craft a community of learners in your classroom, you can get your
students to do almost anything! But you have to trust them and you have to
trust yourself.
It takes time, but it's possible and it can happen. (look at The First Six
Weeks of School...)
That's all I really wanted to say. It hurts my heart when teachers I look up
to use prizes to bribe their kids to do what I expect my kids to do with no
questions asked.
