 You are probably hitting into this issue

 To be sure, please check errors on Maven console and in Eclipse error 
log at <workspace>/.metadata/.log

 As a work around you need to delete folder at 
<workspace>\.metadata\.plugins\org.maven.ide.eclipse\nexus\central while 
Eclipse is down. Afterthat you should be able to update index.
