In the mid 1970s when the US tried to adopt metric, I read somewhere that the
furniture makers in the upper mid-west used millimeters ad the standard unit
on drawings and the factory floor because the country boys could deal better
with the integers than the more common vulgar fractions.
Maybe the idea isn't as new as thought in some places.
