A fuel tanker supplying Nunavit communities has run aground in the Northwest Passage. The CBC reports the capacity of the tanker only in litres, 9 million liters. http://www.cbc.ca/canada/north/story/2010/09/02/northwest-passage-oil-tanker-spill.html
The BBC decides that litres are NOT understandable, and converts it to American gallons, to help their readers understand (2.4 million gallons). I suppose the good news is that it also mentions the 9 million litre figure (incorrectly as 9 m). Note that it would be about 2 million Imperial gallons. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-11172543 I would guess the CBC is the original source for the story, who else would have reporters on this? So the BBC went out of its way to provide this conversion.
