I suppose the on-stage "playing" was most often played by the continuo group. There are several examples of the on-stage, non-sounding theatratical instruments in the museums. As far as I understand the Cavalieri preface, it says in effect that it would nice, if the actors really could play themselves. And if they cannot, the sound comes from the continuo group.
