Hi Robert,

I fully expect this discussion group to keep going.

For a five-note chord from the fifth course to first I would play two bass
notes with the thumb - fifth course then fourth - then rake the index finger
from the second course to the third, then play the first course with the
middle finger. Certainly, this method was used by lute players. I can't say
for definite whether vihuela players would have done the same.
