Dear Thomas,indeed very much fine lute music in Casanova. And the film is quite interesting too!
Both Farinelli il castrato (1994) and Le Roi dance (2000) are by Gérard Corbiau. I saw the former when it came out, but haven't see the latter yet.
IIRC, Arne Keller confirmed a few years back, that the innovative "sound canals" in Tremain's book do indeed exist.
