I believe(though it has been some time), that when I had this problem, I had slapd.conf wrong....though I'm just shooting from the hip.  I also have had the missing Server.config problem, thought the trouble never cleared till I had both in place and working.

Hi Zack,

You have to edit Server.config and install it in /usr/local/vk/etc/
before you start using VishwaKarma.  The Makefile doesn't do this
automatically since it could lead to overwriting an existing config.
