I actually met him and went to his house twice, which was rather humble for such a giant and not too far from my father's place in a rather nondescript neighborhood. A mutual friend, about half way between our respective ages, introduced us. I had no idea who he was at the time except my friend insisted that Mr. Farnsworth had invented television. I really didn't believe that, but learned better later. My friend insisted that the two of us meet, because he thought that some of things I was working on at the time might interest Mr. Farnsworth. When we walked in the door, I saw a man with a pronounced stoop and a look of defeat. It was also obvious that the man had had a few, surprising for a Mormon. When I showed him some of the holographic devices I had made (very rare at the time) his eyes lit up and there was a little liveliness that wasn't there before. We talked for a while, and he was pretty interested in some of the stuff I was up to, but just as a matter of curiosity. After about half an hour, a look of infinite sadness came over his face and he said something I'll never forget. He said, "Look, what you're doing is too original, too basic. And even worse, you've done it by yourself. They'll pull the rug out from under you and beat you to death with it. " Being young and stupid, I didn't take him very seriously.
