I think you may have negated your original argument
wrt the Arrata experiment.

With alphas at that energy, there will be *many*
gammas, not very few, but for the sake of argument
even if there were only a few, they are so easily
detected by any and all GM detectors that they would
stand out like a sore thumb, even from a distance, and
could not conceivably be overlooked by any competent
investigator.

ERGO Arrata did not detect any, and ERGO your
suggested reaction simply cannot be the operative
mechanism in his device.
