This reminds me of the insight of my favorite detective - Hieronymus Bosch... not the painter, the tunnel rat.

Every time he must go to the LA morgue, he remembers that the cororner repeatedly warns the rookies that almost all odor there is *paticulate* based, and not vapor.

Vapor - presumably is highly preferable to small bits of rapidly decaying flesh - and certain in a morgue something gaseous would be somewhat less ... how shall we say ... revolting?

This may be a bit too graphic for a contemplative audience of experimenters, but it does reinforce the point you are making...
