Pinon Canyon Expansion; The biggest Army Land-grab Since the
Indian Wars

Presenters:
Doug Holdread; Artist, Educator and Activist, Trinidad, Colorado
Wes McKinley; State Representative, Rancher, Springfield
(other possible presenters include Bill Sulzman, Citizens for
Peace in Space, Wayne Snider, La Junta Economic Development
Coalition, Larry Daves, Colorado Rural Legal Services)

WHEN: November 28th, 7:00-8:30 pm
WHERE: University of Colorado at Boulder, Humanities Building,
Room 250

"In 1983 the U.S. Government created the Pinon Canyon maneuver
Site. The 237,000 acre site is the Army's second largest training
range. The land was seized by forcing ranching families off their
land through condemnation. Many of the people who were kicked out
of their homes were living on the same land that their ancestors
had homesteaded in the 1800s. The Army promised at the time that
they would never allow live fire at the site, and they promised
they would NEVER expand it.
Now the Army wants to do it again. This time they want to seize
2.5 million acres, swallowing up the entire southeastern corner of
the state of Colorado, all the way to the Kansas and Oklahoma
borders. .

The Army broke their promise about live fire in 2004, and now they
want to break their promise to American Citizens about not
expanding, and they have not provided one valid reason why
expansion is necessary. In fact, they haven't provided much
information at all. Most of what has been learned has been through
leaked Army documents and documents obtained through the Freedom
of Information Act.

The Pinon Canyon Expansion Opposition Coalition , (PCEOC) was
created to help educate Americans to a threat which affects us
all; the threat to our private property rights, and the threat of
a military establishment that has grown out of control.

A map showing Santa Fe Trail historic sites, with the rough
outline (the map is not to scale) of the 2.5 million acre expansion.

The Southeastern Colorado region which would be engulfed by the
Army is a veritable gold mine of history and culture. More than
80 percent of the Canyonlands has been inventoried for heritage
resources. Thousands of archaeological sites have been documented
spanning approximately the past 11,500 years. Hundreds of these
sites are considered significant and eligible to the National
Register of Historic Places .

A group that is one of thousands of unspoilt petroglyphs that
dot the region.

The Expansion would swallow up a significant section of the Santa
Fe Trail along with thousands of sites including those in the
Purgatory and Apishipa River Valleys.

The presentation will include photographs of the beauty and
grandeur of this relatively unknown part of the state. It will
also present evidence substantiating the claim that the Army
wants to take millions of acres away from ranching families in
order to create the largest live-fire zone in the entire world.
The program will also inform the public about legislation which
will be introduced to the Colorado legislature by Representative
Wes McKinley which he hopes will thwart the Army.

It is a sad day for Colorado's citizens and for all Americans when
patriotic ranchers have to defend their homes against an invasion
by their own Army.
